Seeding and Aeration

Seeding and Aeration in Louisville, KY

Aeration and seeding are essential components of a good lawn maintenance program. The Louisville area has a lot of dense clay soil that can be compacted. This makes it difficult for water, air, and nutrients to reach the root system of your grass. Annual aeration and seeding can help maintain the long-term health of your lawn. Aeration helps create pathways to the root system to promote better health and more robust roots. Seeding - either power seeding or broadcast seeding (also known as overseeding) - provides additional grass seed to help increase turf density. Healthy grass plants and a dense cover are the best ways to prevent weeds naturally!

What is Aeration?

Aeration is a process that promotes turf health by removing small cores or "plugs" from the lawn. It enables air, water, and nutrients to reach the root system of your grass more easily. Aerating your lawn is essential; it's an easy and affordable way to improve soil health, regardless of the season.

Aeration also helps make your WLS fertilization and weed control program applications more effective because they can reach the root system! To maximize the impact of these services, we recommend pairing aeration with broadcast seeding. Every lawn can benefit from aeration and seeding!

Why Aerate?

Reduce compaction

Improve the flow of water, air, and nutrients to the root system

Seeding

Did you know that grass seed has a lifespan of approximately 7 - 10 years? This means that you need to seed your lawn regularly to ensure you’re keeping the density of your grass plants high. Higher density in your turf means that weed plants have less area to establish - keeping your lawn looking lush and providing natural weed control.

Power Seeding Vs. Broadcast Seeding

Not every lawn needs power seeding, but every lawn can benefit from seeding in Louisville, KY. We recommend broadcast seeding, in combination with aeration, for well-established lawns to maintain overall health and turf density. Seeding is the most important thing you can do for long term weed prevention and lawn health.

Power seeding is recommended for properties with thin areas (low density), lawns with bare spots, and lawns that are full of weeds or less desirable grasses like crabgrass and bermuda grass. Power seeding is a more intensive process for a lawn that needs revitalization.

Power seeding is sometimes called slit seeding. Our power seeding machine cuts a slit into the ground, drops the seed into the slit, and then covers the seed back up. We complete our seeding in the fall because temperatures are excellent, so your grass plants aren’t under heat stress, but the soil is warm enough to support seed germination.

Let the experts at WLS help to diagnose your lawn’s needs, increase your lawn’s overall health, turf density, and curb appeal, and get the lawn you deserve!
